Inside the community kitchen that serves 600 meals a day in Pune, cooked by the women who live next door.
Words by Fatima Sheikh

By 7 a.m. the kitchen smells of cumin and fresh rotis. Twelve women from the neighbourhood self-help group are already at work.
More than a meal
For the cooks, it’s a fair wage and a shared business. For the children, it’s the most reliable meal of the day, and for the elderly, often the only conversation.
We track every child’s height and weight twice a year. Stunting in the area has fallen by a third since the kitchen opened.
